A gunman barged into a jewelry store and shot down the store owner, in central New Jersey, on Monday afternoon.
Unexpectedly, after murdering the owner, the gunman killed himself too.
Jack Bennett, a spokesman for the Somerset County prosecutor’s office stated, “A gunman went into the jewelry store, held it up, shot the owner, and then the gunman committed suicide.”
More about the incident
The shelling took place at around 4:45 p.m. at the Roy T. Jewelers, a small shop in a suburban shopping center in Bridgewater Township.
The prosecutor’s office said that it would be disseminating more information, including the names of the slain shop owner and the attacker, on Tuesday morning.
However, the spokesman for the Somerset County prosecutor’s office refused to comment further on the incident.
Not a single soul other than the gunman and the proprietor was wounded in the shooting and thus, the cops were not hunting for any other assassins, as per the prosecutor’s office.
Was there any link between the victim and the assailant?
It’s learnt that Jack Bennett was not even interested to inquire about whether there was a scuffle between the gunman and the owner, or whether they were acquainted with each other or not.
Peter Allan, who works at Go Soccer, a store in the same shopping plaza as the jeweler said, “It doesn’t make any sense.”
“The heaviest thing going on in this area is a shoplifting,” added Mr. Allan.
Regardless of the police vans and crime-scene tape out front, most people at the shopping center seemed to be unaware of the happening. “I’ve been watching people still pulling in and getting their nails done at the salon,” said Mr. Allan.
Among the ones who were worried was Steve Monte, 45, who lived in Hillsborough, N.J. She articulated, “It’s upsetting. This whole area is pretty quiet. It’s sleepy little communities; there’s never any gun violence.”
Brutal offense is uncommon in Somerset County, which is nearly 50 miles southwest of New York City.
