Weight loss: The key to improved sex life

The benefits of weight loss are many. We see women fussing over weight, but men are usually unaffected by obesity.
However, now men are also going to take note of the fact that weight loss is of great benefit to them as well.
A new study has thrown light on the fact that weight loss can help men facing erectile dysfunction and urinary tract problems, particularly in obese men suffering from type 2 diabetes.
Researchers at the University of Adelaide, led by Prof. Gary Wittert, believe that losing a few pounds could help obese diabetics solve a bunch of their problems.
The study
They studied 31 such men who were suffering from impotence, lack of sexual drive and lower urinary tract issues.
These men were prescribed to reduce 600 calories a day from their diet. A significant number of these men showed improved sexual health within 8 weeks.
For the study, these men were either given a low calorie diet, or a low fat, low carbohydrate protein diet. Both these diets improved blood vessel health, and thus led to improvement in sexual functioning.
The findings of the study
The study also showed an improvement in the blood sugar levels, insulin sensitivity and lipid profile in these men.
Earlier studies have also shown that obesity adversely affects all body organs, the urinary system and sexual functioning are the first to be affected.
Erectile dysfunction, in turn, can be indicative of poor heart health, as it signifies poor blood supply and thus, weight loss improves heart health as well.
“Our findings are consistent with the evidence that not only erectile function but also urinary tract symptoms are a marker of cardio-metabolic risk”, said Wittert.
Excess weight also results in reduction of testosterone, the hormone which affects the sexual functioning of men. This is in fact one of the main culprits causing impotency.
Irwin Goldstein, editor in chief, The Journal of Sexual Medicine, where this study was published, said that this study supports earlier claims “that lifestyle is relevant and can positively affect sexual function.”
A simple change in lifestyle and all these benefits. Eating healthy, leading a proper lifestyle, with proper excercizing can be the key to being sexually active and improving over all health.
Eating healthy and losing weight is definitely better than oral drugs used to improve sexual drive and impotence, more so as it helps your heart as well.
Weight gain has never been a major worry for men. But ED certainly gives them sleepless nights.
This study is perhaps the best incentive for obese diabetics, rather men in general, to shed those extra pounds, a mental Viagra to motivate them to make those few lifestyle changes.
