'Limitless' tops box office with $19 million
It’s party time for Relativity Media as its maiden domestic distributed movie ‘Limitless’, grossed a whopping $19 million opening at the box office, after its release this Friday.
Starring Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish, the results of ‘Limitless’ were far better than what the makers had expected.
The audience that the movie received was diverse, and it drew in more females (53 %) than males.
“Bradley Cooper is a movie star, while Robert De Niro is an icon. You add these stars to a film that has a very unique take on the traditional thriller genre, and Limitless became a movie for everyone,” said Kyle Davies, who is the president of theatrical distribution at Relativity Media.
‘The Illusionist’ famed director Neil Burger directed the movie, while Leslie Dixon of the ‘Hairspray’ fame wrote the screenplay.
‘Limitless’ revolves around a writer, who struggles to achieve success in the domain, and his life takes a complete 360 degrees turn after he consumes a ‘top secret smart drug.’
About the movie’s overseas trade
Out of the $30 million that the production company spent on the movie, it has been able to cover half the cost from its foreign gross sales.
Though the movie did not open throughout the world, it drew in $1.8 million from the overseas market.
“Limitless had an advantage over the competition in being rated PG-13,” informed a source.
How others fared at the BO?
Following the footsteps of ‘Limitless,’ were movies like ‘Lincoln Lawyer’ at $13.4 million, and ‘Paul’ at $13.2 million.
“The race between the two won’t be officially decided until today, when final numbers are calculated. Still, neither brought in enough, to best holdovers ‘Rango’ and ‘Battle: Los Angeles’,” confirmed a source.
‘Lincoln Lawyer’ production house Lionsgate’s president of distribution, David Spitz said, “Our gross went up 37% from Friday to Saturday. We knew then we had a film that delivered. People loved Matthew McConaughey in this, especially women, who really dig him.”
