It’s said that all a writer needs for inspiration is two hours’ time and two feet of level space. But there are places on earth where, if there is a writer present within an individual, that self cannot remain hidden. The places are themselves the muses. They call the writer forth. And this is what is offered to you in the series of seminars: CREATIVITY IN WOMEN, with Dorothy Allison, Jacquelyn Mitchard; ANCIENT CULTURES verses FICTION, with Margaret Drabble; WHEN FICTION TOUCHES THE WORLD, Breyten Breytenbach; THE WORLD OF DANTE, with Matthew Pearl, the winner of the prestigious Dante Prize; BORDER CROSSINGS: POLITICS IN FICTION AND ART, with Novelist and NPR Commentator, Andrei Codrescu and renown Art Historian, Peter Selz.
Carefully, mindful of the muses that have been summoned in these places of nearly sacred beauty, we’ve chosen five settings for writers’ retreats of exceptional quality and intensity. They are Belize, Dordogne, Tuscany, Zambia, and Botswana – diverse compass points where ancient peoples were moved to create magnificent art by the magnificence around them. In Belize, ruins evidence the Mayans passionate devotion to their gods. In Dordogne, artists by firelight recounted their exploits in cave paintings as alive as they were millennia ago. Etruscan feats of engineering and agricultural majesty, as well as the birth of the Renaissance, are comprised even in modern Tuscany; Botswana and Zambia are both heralded all over the world for their careful preservation of wildlife and stabilized safe governments.
In each of these places will gather writers for the page and the screen, some of whom are household names, among them, Emmy Award Winning Screenwriter for The Straight Story, John Roach; Dorothy Allison, the author of ’Bastard Out of Carolina’; Margaret Drabble, ’Witch of Exmoor’; Connie May Fowler, ’Before Women Had Wings’; Joyce Maynard, ’To Die For’; and Jacquelyn Mitchard the author of ’The Deep End Of The Ocean’. All chosen for their ability to teach – to communicate their own passion and nurture that of other writers and thinkers. Sumptuous meals of indigenous cuisine, peaceful and awe-inspiring surroundings and plenty of time to reflect and connect complete the irresistible combination of sensory delights.

Author Larry Brown, who wrote about the often rough, gritty lives of rural Southerners, died Wednesday at his home, his publisher said. He was 53.
Brown died of an apparent heart attack, North Carolina-based Algonquin Books announced.

Oscar-winning director Pedro Almodovar’s latest film, Bad Education, will carry an NC-17 rating, a commercially damaging tag which means that no one aged 17 and under will be admitted.
Almodovar’s film, which delves into the issue of priestly sexual abuse within the context of a homoerotic film noir, was released Friday in New York via Sony Pictures Classics. It opens Dec. 10 in Los Angeles.

Hollywood’s major movie studios said they won a $23.8 million judgment against a California company and its Malaysian owner for operating a Web site that charged customers to download illegally copied movies.
The company, MasterSurf Inc, is owned by Tan Soo Leong, and it operated a site called Film88.com, according to a statement by the Motion Picture Association of America, which represents the studios in governmental and industry matters.
