| Soroptimist Sponsors Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence: November 25 event held on the International Day |

Soroptimist, an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world...
Every nine seconds, a woman in the United States is beaten by her spouse or intimate partner. That equals more than 1.3 million acts of brutality perpetrated upon women each year. Affecting every socioeconomic status, culture and country in the world, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women. Soroptimist International of the Americas, an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls, works to prevent and end domestic violence. As an organization of working women, Soroptimist specifically targets the workplace, where many domestic violence victims can be found each day.
On Thursday, November 25, the United Nations-designated International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women, Soroptimist members around the world will place thousands of purple cards containing domestic abuse prevention information and hotline numbers at local businesses, in women’s restrooms, and if possible, attached to employee paychecks. Soroptimists will also hold lectures and other events to draw attention to domestic violence as a workplace concern.
For women who are experiencing domestic violence, the workplace can represent a safe haven from their problems. Unfortunately, however, domestic violence often follows its victims into the workplace. According to the American Institute on Domestic Violence, 74 percent of abused women are harassed by their abusers while at work. When abuse follows a woman to work, it can put the safety of her coworkers at risk as well. Domestic abuse also constitutes a financial issue for employers: According to the American Institute on Domestic Violence, employers in the U.S. lose between $3 billion and $5 billion every year in absenteeism, lower productivity, higher turnover, and health and safety costs associated with battered workers.
On the surface, domestic violence may not seem to be a work-related issue, but the reality is that women do not leave abuse behind when they go to work, stated Soroptimist International of the Americas President Victoria Hobbs. Abusers find ways to harass their victims on the job by calling or emailing them, and often showing up at the workplace. This can put the entire workplace at risk.
Women need to know that they have a support system and that help is out there, added Hobbs. This campaign also encourages employees to keep their eyes and ears open for warning signs that co-workers are being abused.
The Soroptimist Workplace Campaign coincides with the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women. In 1999, the United Nation¹s General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women and invited governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to coordinate activities to raise public awareness about violence against women. Soroptimist, which has official status with the U.N., changed the date of its annual campaign to support the U.N.¹s international efforts to eliminate violence against women. The Workplace Campaign is a winner of the Associations Make a Better World Award, sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
Founded in 1921, Soroptimist comprises approximately 95,000 members in more than 120 countries and territories worldwide who contribute time and financial support to community-based projects that benefit women and girls. Soroptimist International of the Americas¹ major program, the Women’s Opportunity Awards, provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. Although not a requirement for the program, many Women¹s Opportunity Award recipients are domestic abuse survivors.
