| Red Wine - A Boon for Healthy Teeth |

Certain compounds in Red Wine can be helpful in protecting the teeth from the gum disease, as per the research conducted by the Canadian scientists in Quebec. The research was highlighted at the 35th annual meeting of the American Association for Dental Research, in Florida.
The scientists intimated that the compound found in the drink, called "polyphenols", could be harnessed to control this disease. It could be helpful in preventing and treating the gum disease. However they also warned that the excessive use of the red wine can also lead to mouth cancer. The excessive consumption could also stain the teeth.
This could be a good news for the wine consumers but the non-drinkers need not worry as the component ’polyphenols’ found in red wine can also be found in cranberry juice. Cranberry juice is an effective substance of inflammation, and that it could lead to a new approach to treating gum diseases as per the researchers.
A major cause behind tooth loss is Periodontitis, which affects the gums and the bones, loosening the teeth. The polyphenols are found to target those molecules which stimulate the disease and reducing the inflammatory response incited by the bacteria. Canadian scientists considered the polyphenols as an obstacle which barricades the production of free radical molecules.
Periodontitis affects about14 per cent of adults aged between 21 and 50 and 65% of adults over 50.
The advantages of consuming fresh fruits and yellow-green vegetables and beverages, specially green tea and red wine, to reduce the cancer incidences and mortality, have been reported in different studies in recent years. The study also unveils that the red wine and specifically the grape seeds possess anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities that prevent the heart disease.
However the exorbitant and unreasonable use of the red wine could be troublesome for health, but some anti-oxidant properties of the wine could be useful in preventing and treating the gum diseases as well as other disorders involving the free radicals.
