Leading cities in Punjab are awash with colourful cultural events, and making the mood even more festive is the bonhomie with Pakistani participants.

Amritsar and Jalandhar are in the middle of a cultural extravaganza for which artistes from all parts of India and Pakistan have arrived.

In Jalandhar, the Saanjh Dillan Di (Meeting of Hearts) cultural event started Saturday in which a 93-member delegation of Pakistanis is taking part.

A big cultural event was organised at Jalandhar to welcome the artistes.

The Pakistani visitors comprising singers, actors, folk artistes, comedians and poets were accorded a warm welcome by their Indian counterparts when they crossed over into India Friday.

The festivities started with a colourful procession taken out on Jalandhar streets to mark the beginning of the two-day event.

World Punjabi Conference’s Pakistan chapter president Fakar Zaman said such joint events would go a great way in ending suspicion between the two countries.

This was the best way to strengthen the bond of peace between both countries, he said on arrival at Wagah.

The Sikh holy city of Amritsar saw the third day of the Amritsar Heritage Festival Saturday.

Colourful tableaux depicting the life and dances of the state were taken out in a procession through city roads Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday, leading classical vocalist Girja Devi is performing. An Odissi dance performance is being given by Madhvi Mudgal.

On Sunday, leading Pakistani singer Abida Parveen will perform against the backdrop of the magnificent Khalsa College building.

A heritage festival will also start in Bathinda city next week.

The mega events would, however, be in Patiala beginning Dec 1.  A three-day World Punjabi Conference will be held in the city when intellectuals and artistes will come from various parts of the world.

The chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Parvez Elahi, would be the chief guest for the event. He is likely to fly in here in a special private aircraft being made available to him by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

Amarinder Singh, the chief minister of India’s Punjab state whose hometown is Patiala, has decided to present an 85 horsepower Swaraj tractor to his Pakistani counterpart as a gift.

Amarinder Singh was gifted an Arabian horse by Elahi when the former visited Pakistan in March this year.

The conference would be followed by the first-ever Indo-Pakistan Punjab Games during Dec 5-11. Sportsmen from Punjab states in both countries will compete in the first such games between the two sides.
