So where are you going today? And how are you going there? Is it the age old Microsoft Internet Explorer, the revamped Netscape Browser 8 or the cool Firefox. April 2005 saw the downfall in the percentage of Internet Explorer for the first time ever since we’ve been seeing browsers, and Firefox has been making inroads. This has been the first time in a while that any other browser has gained some momentum and people are switching to Firefox, and developers are also considering both platforms when they’re building Web sites.

AOL came up with Netscape 8 last month, and had to release patches within 24 hours of its launch, with the last one coming out yesterday to fix the XML issue for Internet Explorer. It is built on the Gecko engine that powers the Mozilla Firefox browser, but it can also run the same engine as Microsoft Internet Explorer on more than 150,000 sites that have been certified as "trusty" by the TrustE organization. The result is a very safe browsing environment, complete with pop-up blocking and antiphishing certificate displays. Add to that tabbed browsing, up to 10 different customized toolbars, and live content, such as weather and news, streamed onto your desktop, and you have one exciting browser.

Firefox is lauded by fans for its download speed and a superior user interface, and users say that its pop-up blocker is one of the best out there. It offers tabbed browsing, which means that users can jump back and forth between different sites with only one window open, and live bookmarks, which show users the most recent headlines on their favorite sites and lets them go directly to those articles.

Internet users began switching after several security problems emerged with IE, which of course is built into Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows operating system. Microsoft issued a patch for Windows XP, that platform’s most recent iteration, but users complain that IE hasn’t truly been updated since 2001. Anyone using Windows 98 or Windows 2000 who wants the most secure system has to upgrade to XP and download the patch, called Service Pack 2.

With these two making waves on the internet Microsoft would be hard pressed to launch its promised Internet Explorer 7 soon, and it better be good.

As of now, Firefox would be our pick for its features and system resources it consumes as compared to Netscape 8 which also has all the features but consumes a truck load of system resources.
