Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday directed that the rehabilitation of those displaced due to the dam project on river Narmada should be conducted properly.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday directed that the rehabilitation of those displaced due to the dam project on river Narmada should be conducted properly.

In a letter to Water Resources Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, the prime minister urged him to visit the Narmada river valley and address concerns on rehabilitation of people displaced by the mega project before permission could be granted for raising the height of the dam.

The height of the Narmada dam - a project that has faced immense criticism from environmental activists for several years - is proposed to be raised from 110 to 121 metres.

However, activists belonging to the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save Narmada Movement) have alleged authorities were not following the terms of rehabilitation stipulated by the Supreme Court.

Manmohan Singh stressed that once the onus on rehabilitation was fully met, raising the height of the dam could follow the established procedure.

He asked that the social justice and empowerment ministry to put out in the public domain complete information on the rehabilitation process, to assuage any fears.

States participating in the project have been asserting that rehabilitation had been taking place in accordance with the norms.
