An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale has jolted Japan’s main northern island of Hokkaido.

Four people have been slightly injured by the quake, which struck below the ocean just east of the island’s tip.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency says the agency issued a warning for tsunami tidal waves, which it later cancelled.

The Kyodo newsagency says two men, a boy aged nine and a woman, 77, suffered minor injuries from the impact felt in towns in Hokkaido.

Train services were also temporarily suspended.

Late last month, an earthquake of 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Hokkaido, injuring 17 people.
