India’s leftist trade unions will conduct a nationwide strike against the government for the fuel price hike Tuesday, the same day top Left leaders are slated to have breakfast with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

India’s leftist trade unions will conduct a nationwide strike against the government for the fuel price hike Tuesday, the same day top Left leaders are slated to have breakfast with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Trade unions affiliated to the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left group have announced a national strike Tuesday to force the central government to accept the demand for reducing fuel prices.

In West Bengal, the trade unions launched a weeklong protest Saturday.

At the same time, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-Left coordination meeting will also take place Tuesday, and the Left leaders will meet Manmohan Singh over breakfast to discuss the same issue.

CPI-M politburo member Sitaram Yechuri has said the issue of petroleum price hike would be forcefully taken up at the coordination meeting even after the price of petrol was reduced earlier this month.

The Left group, comprising the CPI-M, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and the Forward Bloc, have demanded a roll back in the prices of liquid petroleum gas and diesel.

It has asked the government to cut duties on petroleum products to insulate the common people from the fuel price hike. Also, it wants that oil companies share the burden of the oil price increase in the international market, instead of passing it on to consumers.

Besides the fuel price hike issue, the coordination meeting will feature other contentious topics such as foreign investment caps in crucial sectors and the draft Patents (Amendment) Bill.

The four Left parties have sent their written response to the government on the proposal to raise the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the telecom sector.

They also made clear their views on the draft Patents (Amendment) Bill, on which Commerce Minister Kamal Nath made an unsuccessful attempt at persuading the Left.

Originally scheduled for Nov 11, the UPA-Left coordination meet was postponed due to the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
