The premiere of a film by artist Tracey Emin is being held in her home town of Margate - the backdrop for the movie.

Top Spot was shown to an invited audience at a hotel on Thursday in an event organised by BBC South East Today and attended by Emin.
Last week Emin withdrew the film from UK cinema release after it was given an 18 certificate by censors.

Commissioned by BBC Three, the film centres on six teenagers growing up and deals with rape, abortion and suicide.

’Positive message’

The premiere was held at the Walpole Bay Hotel which was also used as one of the locations for the film.

Speaking before the premiere, Emin said it was very important that the first showing of the film was in front of an audience who live in Margate.

One of the biggest stars of the film is Margate so I think the people who live in Margate, who spend there time here, should be able to see how beautiful the town looks and also be proud of it.

What I want when people look at the film is to stop thinking about me and just think about young women in general, she said.

The British Board of Film Classification gave the film an 18 rating because of a suicide scene - a move which angered Emin.

Although she had the chance to change her film so it could be given a 15 rating, Emin refused.

I do not want to be dictated to by a censorious body of people, she said.

My film has a good moral story behind it - it is actually encouraging women to become artists, to go out and make a film and not be destructive.

I have a positive message behind my film and I do not think they wanted to see that.

Emin said the six girls portrayed in Top Spot were based on herself and her experiences growing up.

It is due to be shown on BBC Three in December.
