It seems Apple isn’t going to go out of news very soon. After having created a lot of waves in the industry by dropping its long time chip supplier IBM, it is in the news again. But this time Apple hasn’t done anything. It is Michael Dell, CEO of Dell who has shown interest in the Mac OS.
Michael Dell, Dell founder and chairman, told Fortune magazine Thursday he wouldn’t mind adding Apple’s OS to its software product list, which includes a couple flavors of Linux to go with its Windows-heavy lineup.
"If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers," he said in an e-mail to the publication.
But it is unlikely to happen since it would involve so much of rework to be done on both hardware and software. Mac OS isn’t as flexible as Windows and it would also require hardware manufacturers to produce configurations strictly in compliance with the software.
It would also lead to software piracy, which Apple has been able to keep out till now, by keeping a tight control over the entire combination of hardware and software as a premium product.
"Mac OS X will only run on Macs. Apple has no plans to sell Mac OS X software to run on PCs," an Apple spokeswoman said in an e-mail response to questions about Dell.
