Amidst stray incidents of violence, between 60 to 65 percent of voters Saturday cast their ballots for electing representatives to the 144 urban bodies spread across Madhya Pradesh.

We are yet to get the exact polling percentage. But our estimates are that 60 to 65 percent of votes were cast, an official of the state election commission told IANS.

Due to violence and reports of bogus voting, the commission ordered re-polling Monday in nine polling centres.

A Congress activist was hacked to death in Tikamgarh district. According to reports reaching here, Shailendra Bidhua was on his way to the polling booth when armed men attacked him. Bidhua died on the spot.

Other Congress activists stalled polling in the booth but it resumed after police reached the spot.

Clashes between workers of different parties were reported from several places, including this state capital.

Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Samajwadi Party clashed at a polling centre of Vidisha district.

The activists threw stones at each other and shots were fired in the air. Police rushed to the spot and lobbed tear gas shells to control the situation.

Zafar Beg, an independent candidate contesting in Indore district, was injured in clashes with the supporters of a rival candidate. Police recovered a pistol and some cartridges from Beg.

The second phase of urban bodies’ polls will take place Tuesday.
